Significant drug seizure at Gold Coast

Police have charged eight people with trafficking and possession of dangerous drugs charges following the closure of Operation Romeo Cosine.

Yesterday officers from the Gold Coast Major and Organised Crime Squad and Taskforce Maxima-Organised Crime Gangs Group executed a number of search warrants targeting individuals involved in the distribution of cocaine.

It will be alleged that during a search warrant at Surfers Paradise, a man who ran from police produced a knife at officers before being taken into custody. This person was allegedly found to be in possession of one-kilogram of cocaine.

As a result of the search warrants police seized cocaine, cannabis, mobile phones, a knife, equipment used to compress and stamp cocaine, and a motor vehicle.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ian Galpin of the Major and Organised Crime Squad said QPS were actively seizing on every available opportunity to target groups who continue to engage in illicit and criminal behaviour.

“Through this investigation, I am confident we have disrupted a major supply network of cocaine to the Gold Coast and I anticipate further arrests,” Detective Senior Sergeant Ian Galpin said.

The dismantlement of this group is an excellent outcome for the local community, and we will continue to work with our partners, including Home Affairs to further disrupt this group.”

Eight people, including three Colombian nationals, will appear in the Southport Magistrates Court facing a total of 19 charges, including trafficking and possession of a dangerous drug and one charge of serious assault of a police officer whilst armed with a weapon.
