Construction of 145 new social homes at Villawood has reached a major milestone, with the building structure now reaching its highest point and work progressing on the internal fit-out.
The Albanese and Minns’ Labor Governments are partnering together to deliver thousands of new homes thanks to the largest investment in social and affordable housing in history.
Work is progressing well on the transformation of a long-vacant site on Kamira Avenue, Villawood which started construction in mid-2025 and is on track for completion in late 2027.
The development is transforming a 1.5-hectare site into a vibrant community with 100 per cent of homes delivered in dedicated to social housing to provide safe, modern housing for families who need it most.
Located around 200 metres from Villawood train station and less than 10 kilometres from Parramatta CBD, the new homes will be close to transport, shops and essential services.
With the main structure now complete, work is underway on internal walls as construction continues to move ahead.
The Villawood project is being delivered by Homes NSW in partnership with Traders in Purple and is supported through Round Two of the Australian Government’s Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF).
The milestone follows planning approval for five other Homes NSW-led projects supported through HAFF Round Two, which will deliver a further 826 homes across Sydney, including 686 social and affordable homes.
The Minns Labor Government is laser-focused on increasing housing supply in NSW, supported by:
- $5.1 billion to deliver more than 8,400 new social homes, at least 50% of which will be prioritised for victim survivors of domestic and family violence.
- A world leading presale guarantee to fast-track construction and increase housing supply.
- The largest planning reforms in a generation, establishing the Housing Delivery Authority and prioritising well-located homes near public transport.
A full list of projects from Round 2 of the HAFF can be found at Housing Australia Future Fund.
Quotes attributable toSenator for NSW Senator Tony Sheldon:
“A safe, secure home can change the course of someone’s life, and here in Villawood we’re building 145 of them thanks to the Albanese & Minns’ Labor Governments”
“I’ve spent much of my life living and working in Western Sydney, and I know how hard people here work to provide for their families. Building more homes is one of the ways we’re making life a little easier for everyone who calls this city home.”
“For a decade, the Liberals & Nationals treated housing as optional. The previous state government ripped more than $3 billion worth of social housing while federally the Liberals and Nationals voted against the very laws helping build these homes today.”
Quotes attributable to Minister for Housing and Homelessness Rose Jackson:
“Just over a year since construction started, we’re seeing real progress at Villawood, with 145 new social homes taking shape in the heart of Western Sydney.
“This site in Villawood has sat vacant since it’s demolition in the mid-2000s. That’s right, the former Liberal National government left this huge plot of land to languish for over a decade in the midst of a housing crisis.
“Now the decade of inaction is over and we are getting on with the job of building more homes close to public transport, shops and services, just like here in Villawood.
“The Housing Australia Future Fund is helping us work with the Australian Government and our housing partners to deliver more social housing where it’s needed most.”
Quotes attributable to Member for Fairfield David Saliba:
“This site sat vacant for years so it’s thrilling for my community to see it brought back to life.
“Reaching the highest point of the building is an important milestone, but the job isn’t finished. Work is continuing at pace so we can get these homes completed and people through the doors and into their new homes.”
Quotes attributable to TradersIn Purple Executive Director George Geagea:
“Villawood is one of five projects Traders In Purple has participated in with Homes NSW and we are proud of what we have achieved together so far and continue to deliver.
“The supply of all forms of housing is critical to meet the needs of Sydney’s growing population.
“We approach every project with the same absolute commitment to quality, delivering a legacy of homes that are beautiful from the inside out, regardless of tenure.
“As the developer and builder we look forward to the next important milestone when residents are able to move in and experience the security of a beautifully designed and built home.”
