Housing Minister John Carey and Regional Development Minister Alannah McTiernan have announced that six new homes have been purchased in Madigan Estate Baynton to attract and retain government workers to the Karratha area.
Madigan at Baynton is Karratha’s newest and more affordable residential estate close to the Baynton West Primary School, community centre, and adventure playground, and is only minutes from the city centre.
The homes have been spot-purchased by the State Government, as part of the Government Regional Officer Housing Program (GROH) that provides housing to government workers in regional areas to ensure vital services can be delivered.
The properties will house employees from the Departments of:
- Education;
- Primary Industry and Regional Development;
- Communities; and
- Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.
The homes have been constructed with a 7.7 star energy efficiency rating.
Local building company, Thomas Building, constructed the new homes which supported 4 local jobs and 33 subcontractors in the region.
As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:
“This Government is investing $200 million over four years in GROH housing delivery and we are investing $2.4 billion in social housing over these four years.
“The GROH program currently provides homes for more than 5,000 critical State Government workers in regional WA.
“We continue to look at a range of options to address the state’s housing needs, including increasing our stock of GROH properties.
“While there is significant demand for housing across our regional areas, the addition of these GROH properties will provide homes to critical government workers and assist in delivering important work for regional communities across WA.
As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
“Our ability to attract workers for vital State Government services in the regions depends heavily on housing availability.
“These six properties will not only help boost supply, but they will also ensure the Karratha community receives these important government services.”
