Sixteen teens charged for affray

Police have charged 16 males following a series of search warrants executed this morning across the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

The search warrants came following an alleged affray on 31 July at an address on Barkly Street, Footscray. It is alleged a group of people entered the premises with weapons and assaulted four occupants who were inside.

A number of the males arrested were also sought by police in relation to a series of other unrelated affrays and violent incidents, which occurred in Hallam on 9 August, Oakleigh on 9 August and Dandenong on 14 August.

The warrants were executed by police from the North West Metro and Southern Metro Regional Crime Squads. Police seized a number of mobile phones during the search warrants.

North West Metro Regional Crime Squad Detective Senior Sergeant Marnie Sheehy said police would not tolerate public violent incidents that put the safety of others at risk.

“Simply put – police will not tolerate those who break the law or engage in anti-social and violent behaviour that puts the safety of others at risk,” Det/S/Sgt Sheehy said.

“It’s really concerning to see so many young people facing court on serious charges including affray and violent disorder.

“We can’t forget the impact violent crime has on the rest of the community, it causes an unacceptable level of harm and fear.

“That is why we continue to work tirelessly to hold criminals who are committing violent crimes to account.”
