Sloane – Passing Of Hon Bruce Baird AM

Liberal NSW

Kellie Sloane

Leader of the Opposition

NSW Liberal Leader

I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the Hon Bruce Baird AM.

Bruce dedicated his life to public service and made an extraordinary contribution to New South Wales and Australia over many years.

He was first elected to the NSW Parliament in 1984 as the Member for Northcott and served in the Greiner Government as Minister Assisting the Premier and Assisting the Treasurer, and Minister for Transport.

Bruce then went on to serve in the Fahey Government as Deputy Liberal Leader, Minister for the Environment, Minister for Roads, Minister for Tourism and importantly the Minister for Sydney’s Olympic Bid.

After a successful career in the NSW Parliament, Bruce went on to represent the Federal electorate of Cook in the Australian Parliament from 1998 to 2007.

Throughout his public life, Bruce was driven by a strong sense of service, conviction, and compassion, earning the trust and respect of people regardless of their political affiliation. Ever jovial and encouraging, Bruce was often the life of the party.

Bruce was also a deeply respected member of the Liberal family and his contribution to our party continued well beyond his time in elected office, serving as a mentor and guide to many people coming through the party’s ranks.

Above all, Bruce was a devoted husband to his late wife Judy, and a proud father and grandfather.

On behalf of the NSW Liberals, I extend my deepest condolences to Mike, Julia, Steve and the entire Baird family at this very sad time.

Bruce will be greatly missed; may he rest in peace.
