Social housing income eligibility limits to increase

  • State Government increases social housing eligibility limits for both single- and dual-income households
  • Changes to income eligibility limits will ensure recipients of Commonwealth benefits remain eligible for social housing

The State Government has today announced an increase to the income eligibility limits for social housing.

This second increase in eligibility limits for 2023 will ensure that recipients of Commonwealth statutory benefits who receive no other income remain eligible for social housing.

Income eligibility limits will increase by $16 for single-income households and $21 for dual- income households.

Statutory Commonwealth payments including the single Age, Disability Support and Services Pensions, as well as the Carer Payment, will increase by 3.2 per cent from 20 September 2023.

The increase to income eligibility limits affects both public housing and community housing where public housing income eligibility limits are used.

The State Labor Government has increased social housing eligibility four times since coming into Government, ensuring those most vulnerable in the community remain eligible for social housing.

In comparison, in eight years under the previous Liberal-National Government, social housing income eligibility limits were never increased.

As stated by Housing Minister John Carey:

“Social housing income eligibility limits have been raised for the second time in 2023 and for the fourth time under the current State Labor Government.

“Our Government continues to do everything we can to ensure the most vulnerable members of the community can access safe, affordable and sustainable housing.

“These raised income limits are in recognition of rising income support payment rates and ensure the most vulnerable members of our community remain eligible for social housing.”
