Soft plastic recycling changes

See below for Monash Council’s response to the sudden and unexpected halt of the RedCycle soft plastics recycling scheme that provided collection points at Coles and Woolworths supermarkets.

Council is in regular communication with other levels of government and recycling providers and will keep this page updated as more information becomes available.

Statement from Monash Mayor, Cr Stuart James – 9 November

Council is incredibly disappointed in the sudden and unexpected halt of the Redcycle soft plastics recycling program at Coles and Woolworths. This provided an option for people to redirect items like plastic bags away from landfill and into the recycling system.

We understand there is confusion and uncertainty in the community about what to do about soft plastics. Council was not made aware of these issues until reports hit the media last night and Monash, like all councils, is seeking guidance from other levels of government and our supermarkets about alternative options.

In the meantime, if Monash residents have soft plastics collected at home please hold onto them while we seek more information. People with concerns about this impacting their red bin collection can contact Council to discuss options: 9518 3555.
