South-East man arrested for lighting bushfires, South Australia

An elderly man has been arrested for allegedly lighting a series of four bushfires in the Kingston SE area in the last week.

Police will allege the arrested man was involved in lighting four scrub and grass fires all occurring in the Rosetown – Kingston SE area on:

  • Monday 30 December 2019 adjacent to Catherine Gibson Way
  • Thursday 2 January adjacent to Catherine Gibson Way
  • Saturday 4 January adjacent to First Street
  • Saturday 4 January adjacent on Eleventh Street

On Saturday 4 January, police investigations into the fires led them to arrest a 79-year-old man from the State’s South East, charging him with four counts of intentionally causing a bush fire.

The arrested man has been refused police bail and will appear in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court on Monday 6 January.

No property damage was during the fires, however a house did come under threat during one of the fires yesterday.

These charges DO NOT relate and are not connected to the Keilira fire that commenced burning in the South-East on Monday 30 January, which was considered non-suspicious.

Anyone with information regarding the intentional lighting of fires in the Kingston SE area, is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
