Southern Remand Centre tenders sought

Elise Archer,Minister for Corrections

Tenders are being sought for the first stage of works for the $70 million Southern Remand Centre as part of the Hodgman Liberal Government’s plan to keep Tasmanians safe.

The Southern Remand Centre will be built on the Risdon Prison site and designed to separate remandees from the general prison population, improve facilities available for them, including access to legal representation and family, while also increasing the capacity of the prison and upgrading other important existing facilities.

The 140 bed facility is expected to create more than 130 jobs during the construction with 50 ongoing jobs once complete.

The Southern Remand Centre is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2021, and is just one of several significant prison infrastructure projects announced by the Hodgman Liberal Government.

Other projects include a 270 bed $270 million new Northern Prison, and more than $9 million to upgrade facilities at the Risdon Prison complex.
