Sport and recreation budget kicks goals for WA communities

State Budget includes new funding of $167 million towards community sport and recreation

McGowan Government committed to developing healthy and resilient communities

The McGowan Labor Government is giving Western Australian sport and recreation a $167 million boost over the next four years, creating jobs and supporting healthy, liveable communities across the State.

A number of key election commitments have been funded in the State Budget, including:

$20 million towards the East Fremantle Oval Redevelopment;
$10.5 million distributed for more than 100 election commitments for local sport and recreation infrastructure;
$10 million towards the Canning Vale Regional Open Space and Sporting Complex;
$10 million towards the Club Night Lights Program;
$10 million towards the Port Hedland Sporting and Community Hub;
$8 million towards the redevelopment of the Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club;
$8 million towards Bunbury’s South West Sport Centre;
$6 million towards the Kununurra Leisure Centre facility redevelopment;
$5 million to update the Wanneroo Recreation Centre;
$5 million towards Niels Hansen Basketball Stadium redevelopment in Kalgoorlie;
A further $39.5 million will be provided to fund 28 small and medium sport and recreation projects across the State.

The 2021-22 Budget also includes:

$35 million to upgrade some of the ageing facilities at HBF Park ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup;
$32.5 million towards the State Football Centre;
$20 million towards the Keirnan Park sporting precinct development;
$10 million towards the Baldivis Indoor Recreation Centre;
$12 million to the annual Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund.

“Sports and active recreation helps Western Australians stay active, healthy and connected to their local community.

“Through investing in local community and sporting programs and facilities, as well as major infrastructure sporting projects, we are helping create local jobs and healthy communities, as well as providing Western Australians with access to top-quality venues.”
