Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser was today joined by members of Cricket Southern Lakes (Toronto) and Taverners Hunter to open the newly upgraded facilities at Waterboard Oval in Blackalls Park.
Cr Kay Fraser said the works, which included upgrading the car park and amenities building, would help boost participation in both cricket and baseball in the city’s western suburbs.
“These upgrades will create opportunities for more people in our community to stay active and participate in sport,” Cr Fraser said.
“The upgraded amenities building boasts dedicated changerooms for both male and female players, which will go a long way towards helping women feel more comfortable while training or competing at this venue. We’ve also improved access by incorporating accessible parking and pathways on-site, as well as an accessible toilet for spectators.
“Everyone in our community should have the opportunity to participate in sport, and, with funding support from the NSW Government, I’m proud the facilities at Waterboard Oval now support this.”
Lake Macquarie City Council received $895,000 through the NSW Government Regional Sports Facility Fund to complete the $1.79 million project, with Council funding the remainder through development contributions collected in the Toronto contributions catchment.
Community Assets Delivery Coordinator Brent Wellham said the works were completed on time and on budget.
“I’d like to thank the clubs for their cooperation and support while we’ve completed these works, and I am confident the new facilities will make game day even more enjoyable for spectators, players and club reps,” Mr Wellham said.
