Construction of a new 15,000 seat Wyndham City Stadium and elite sports training facility took a significant step forward today after State Planning Minister Richard Wynne approved a key planning amendment.
In a major boost for Wyndham City and the western suburbs, the next steps toward finalising the design and commencing on-site construction of the new stadium at 1160 Sayers Road in Tarneit will now begin.
Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Adele Hegedich, said the stadium and training facility will provide widespread infrastructure, economic and community benefits to Wyndham and beyond.
“This is an exciting project for Wyndham,” Cr Hegedich said. “The planning approval means we can now get on with the job and start preparing to construct the main stadium and elite sports training facility.”
The stadium is expected to be complete and operational by 2023.
The new Wyndham City stadium will be the home of the Western United Football.
Western United Chairman Jason Sourasis said: “Today’s announcement is a huge milestone and is a significant step towards the vision for a world class sport, entertainment, business and living precinct within Melbourne’s West.”
“The planning approval signals the official start to the project and means construction on the stadium can commence by mid-2021 and should be ready in time for the Women’s World Cup in 2023.”
An elite-level football facility will also be built adjacent to the main stadium. This facility, being jointly developed by Wyndham City and the Western Melbourne Group, will benefit professional and local sporting clubs as well as the broader community.
The training facility will include a main grass pitch with 5,000 seats, which will be used by Western United Football Club and their associated teams, including a women’s soccer league team and the National Premier League, as well as for other rectangular sports like rugby league and union.
“Plans for this state-of-the-art facility also include a second grass pitch, and a third synthetic pitch that will primarily be open to the community,” Cr Hegedich said.
“Large projects such as this are significant for a city like Wyndham. As we continue our Covid recovery, we’re working hard to ensure our local economy bounces back and this project will provide jobs and create a fantastic new community asset.”
