Twelve (12) state schools across the Townsville region will re-open tomorrow .
The schools are: Bwgcolman Community School, Cleveland Education and Training Centre, Garbutt State School, Home Hill State High School, Home Hill State School, Ingham State High School; Ingham State School, Jarvisfield State School, Macknade State School, Maidavale State School, North Shore State School and Victoria Plantation State School.
Communities Minister Coralee O’Rourke said the re-opening of schools was part of a long recovery process for Townsville.
“We know there is a long way to go, that’s why we’re keeping a close eye on the recovery process for our community,” she said.
“We thank everyone including school staff, parents and others who have helped speed up this process.
“We will continue to open more schools as it’s safe to do so.”
Education Minister Grace Grace said the decision to re-open the schools was made after a full safety and operational assessment of each school.
She again urged parents to check the status of their school on Department of Education’s school closures website at https://closures.det.qld.gov.au/
“I know our principals, teachers and support staff have been working extremely hard to get their schools back up and running as soon as possible,” she said.
“It’s great news that some of our schools are able to re-open, but there are many more which remain closed. Some schools have been impacted more than others and my department is currently exploring options for schools that may be closed for some time.”
Ms Grace said the Department was continuing to monitor the movement of the current weather system, particularly around the Bowen Basin, Mackay, Proserpine and the Whitsunday Islands.
Heavy rainfall was also predicted for a large area around Cloncurry, Julia Creek and Mount Isa.
Ms Grace said parents should check local weather conditions and road accessand place their safety, and that of their children, above all else. Remember that If it’s Flooded – Forget it!
“Our Principals, teachers and school support staff, as well as regional support staff are also doing an amazing job under the most trying conditions. My thoughts are certainly with them.”
Independent and Catholic schools
Parents with children at independent and Catholic schools should check with individual schools about local arrangements. They should continue to check the school closures website for updates at https://closures.det.qld.gov.au/
Early Childhood Education Centres
Parents are encouraged to make direct contact with their Early Childhood Education Centre/Provider for advice on whether it will be closed.
