Statement From Duty Of Care

Duty of Care

We are devastated at the violent attack on Member for Indi, Helen Haines There is no cause, no conviction and no political ideology that can justify violence against another human being. No matter how much we may think we are right. Whatever the circumstances or motivations behind this attack, we must be unequivocal: violence is not activism.

The fight for climate responsibility, justice and the protection of future generations is rooted in care for people, respect for human dignity and the conviction that we can build a better world together.

We can be uncompromising in our commitment to climate responsibility while being absolutely uncompromising in our rejection of violence. These principles are not in conflict. They are inseparable.

Today, we are grieving, we are appalled, and we stand in solidarity with Helen Haines. No one should have to endure violence for their public service, their beliefs or their participation in democratic life.

The climate movement must always stand for life, dignity and hope.
