Statement of support for Chief Medical Officer and Chief Health Officer

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold around the globe, the eight member organisations of the Alfred Research Alliance remain united in their steadfast support of Australia’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Brendan Murphy, and Victoria’s Chief Health Officer, Professor Brett Sutton.

Under very challenging circumstances, Profs Murphy and Sutton have displayed calm, rational leadership in guiding Australia and Victoria through this public health crisis. The Alliance has been impressed by their commitment to developing and maintaining an evidence-based public health response in consultation with infectious diseases, virology and public health experts.

The Alfred Health Alliance is comprised of eight of Victoria’s preeminent medical research organisations – Alfred Health, Monash University, Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, Burnet Institute, Deakin University, La Trobe University, Nucleus Network and 360biolabs – and many have been actively involved in the Australian response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the situation is ongoing, the members of the Alfred Research Alliance will continue to support the state and national response through the provision of clinical services; research and development; and ongoing communication of relevant and timely information to support the CMO and CHO in managing this public health emergency.

As leaders in the field of biomedical research, the Alfred Research Alliance also recognises the importance of factual, evidence-based advice to communicate accurate information to support calm and appropriate community responses. Members welcomed the recent launch of the government’s public health campaign and remain committed to providing responsible, trustworthy information to their own stakeholders.
