“Police reacted swiftly to the serious and tragic events that took place this afternoon in Bourke St and were able to quickly bring the situation under control. Our thoughts at this time are with those most affected, including their families and friends.
“Melburnians should be reassured by the rapid response from our police and emergency services who worked quickly, bravely and effectively to minimise harm to the public and contain the situation. The City of Melbourne is working closely with all agencies.
“I’m proud of the way our community responded respectfully to police instructions at the scene.
“I know many of us will feel the impact of these terrible events and it’s important at these times that we pull together as a community and support one another.”
