Statement on delivery of essential Council services

The following statement can be attributed to the Lord Mayor Sally Capp.

The City of Melbourne will continue to deliver essential services for the community while working to combat the spread of COVID-19.

A COVID-19 Taskforce has been established at Town Hall and has begun implementing the advice and actions from the Victorian Government and the National Cabinet for COVID-19 across our operations.

Melbourne must remain a caring city that lends a helping hand during tough times. We know that this is a stressful time – so ensuring we continue to deliver for the community and look after those most at risk has never been more important.

We will do everything possible to continue to deliver essential services such as waste and recycling, services to older people, children’s services, homelessness services and animal management.  These services perform an essential public health function so it is important that they continue.

The advice from the State Government is that childcare centres remain open, except where individual services have been directed to close by health authorities.

No staff or children at our centres have been diagnosed or tested for COVID-19 so the following centres remain open as we continue to implement measures to protect the health and wellbeing of children and staff:

  • Hotham Hub Children’s Centre
  • North Melbourne Children’s Centre.

We’re continuing to deliver meals and in-home support services to frail older people, whilst using screening questions and processes to reduce risks posed by COVID-19.

More than 600 people rely on these support services, including domestic assistance, home maintenance, personal care and individual social support. We will do everything possible to continue to deliver more than 200 meals to 44 people each week.
