Statement on sexual harm

Attributable to Universities Australia Chair Professor David Lloyd and Chief Executive Catriona Jackson:

Australia’s universities are strongly committed to reducing instances of sexual harm in the community.

Sexual harm is a major societal issue. Universities, along with governments, businesses, schools and individuals, have a responsibility to help stop the scourge – a responsibility we don’t shy away from.

Our work to address sexual harm has so far led to the development and implementation of hundreds of important initiatives and measures on campuses across the country.

Research from experts in this area continues to inform our approach to this work – work that continues every day because we can always do more.

At a sector-wide workshop held in July, universities committed to holding a national Respect at Uni Week in semester one 2024.

Universities Australia is continuing to work with our members on ways to build and improve on our efforts to date, including around the collection of data, to make university campuses and our communities as safe as they can be.
