With the return of warmer weather, the City of Casey is reminding residents with a backyard pool or spa to ensure they are registered and have the required safety fencing in place to help keep everyone safe near the water.
New state laws introduced in 2019 require all home pools and spas that can hold more than 30cm of water to be registered with Council.
While newly built pools and spas require a building permit, new homeowners who purchase a house with an existing pool also need to check their pool is registered and has a valid Certificate of Compliance confirming it meets safety requirements.
City of Casey Mayor, Cr Michelle Crowther said the laws were introduced to help improve backyard pool safety and reduce the number of drowning accidents that occur.
“Unfortunately, drowning is the most common cause of preventable death for young children in Australia, and most accidents happen in backyard swimming pools,” Cr Crowther said.
“Responsible pool and spa ownership is an important part of creating a safer community. By ensuring safety barriers are compliant and properly maintained, residents can help protect children and other vulnerable people from preventable harm.”
