Stirring a cuppa for seniors

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is commemorated each year on 15 June to highlight one of the worst manifestations of ageism and inequality in our society, elder abuse.

Elder abuse is any act that causes harm to an older person and is carried out by someone they know and trust such as a family member or friend. The abuse may be physical, social, financial, psychological or sexual and can include mistreatment and neglect.

This year, Cardinia Shire Council is encouraging people to take part in the ‘Snap a Selfie whilst stirring a cuppa for seniors’ on Monday 15 June to raise awareness about elder abuse.

It’s easier than ever to help spread awareness of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2020! Show your support on 15 June without even leaving your home by ‘Stirring A Cuppa for Seniors’!

  1. make a cuppa
  2. take a selfie with your cuppa and include something purple in the pic
  3. add a hashtag #WEAAD or #WEAAD2020
  4. share it to social media!

Cardinia Shire Council Mayor Councillor Jeff Springfield said Council is committed to supporting our older residents’ health and wellbeing.

“Council’s Ageing Well Strategy is an important part of Council’s commitment to ensuring our older residents are supported to be healthy and active, stay socially connected and participate fully in the community,” Cr Springfield said.

“World Elder Abuse Awareness Day aims to raise awareness around elder abuse, improve the confidence and resilience of residents to report and stop elder abuse in our community.

“Please consider ‘stirring a cuppa for seniors’ to recognise this day!”
