Strike Force Trident ramps up operations against property crime

Strike Force Trident has recorded its most successful year since the unit was established in 2012, achieving its highest number of enforcement outcomes to date.

During the 2025-26 financial year, the specialist unit took action against 1,452 offenders in relation to 4,466 offences across the Greater Darwin region, up from 1,362 offenders in 2024-25.

The results reflect Strike Force Trident’s increasingly sophisticated investigative capabilities, intelligence-led policing strategies and focus on identifying recidivist offenders and disrupting criminal activity.

The figures also highlight the team’s dedicated approach to pursuing offenders, bringing more complex matters before the courts and holding repeat offenders accountable.

Trident detectives made 1,312 arrests, issued 84 summonses and diverted 56 youth offenders.

Property crime remained the main focus for Strike Force Trident, with almost 70% of all offenders apprehended for offences such as motor vehicle theft, unlawful entry and other property-related crime.

The proactive work undertaken by Strike Force Trident has contributed to reductions in key property offences across the Greater Darwin Region by 6%, when comparing the 12 months ending April 2026 with the previous 12-month period.

Of the 1,452 offenders apprehended, 674 were youths and 778 were adults. Police also identified that 418 offenders were already on court-issued bail when they were apprehended, highlighting the ongoing challenge posed by repeat offending.

Strike Force Trident works alongside local police and specialist units, including the Dog Operations Unit and Operation Ventura, with officers working together to locate offenders and hold those responsible to account.

The unit also regularly focuses on offenders who travel into town, steal vehicles and other property, and then return to remote communities.

Detective Senior Sergeant Darren Burns said the figures reflected the hard work and commitment shown by Strike Force Trident officers every day.

“Strike Force Trident has been operating for several years and is made up of some of the Northern Territory Police Force’s most dedicated and hardworking officers. The success of the unit is a testament not only to those currently serving within it, but also to the leaders and investigators who have helped shape and strengthen the taskforce over time.

“The increase in enforcement activity demonstrates our ongoing commitment to targeting those responsible for property crime and repeat offending and reflects the determination of our members to keep Territorians safe.”
