  • AGL, ANZA Power, APA Group and Quinbrook shortlisted to progress to the next stage of the competitive tender process to deliver 400MW of new gas-fired generation.
  • Strong market response to government tender sees all 10 qualified proponents submit indicative proposals.
  • Indicative proposals represent more than 4GW of potential gas-fired generation capacity in Central Queensland.
  • The Crisafulli Government’s Energy Roadmap is delivering affordable, reliable and sustainable energy for all Queenslanders.

The Crisafulli Government’s Central Queensland gas tender has attracted a strong market response, with all 10 qualified proponents submitting indicative proposals to deliver new gas-fired generation capacity in the region.

The tender managed by Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC), sought private sector proposals to deliver 400MW of additional gas-fired generation capacity in Central Queensland by 2032.

The tender supports the Crisafulli Government’s Energy Roadmap in delivering more affordable, reliable and sustainable energy for Queenslanders, after power prices surged under the former Labor Government during their decade of decline.

Indicative proposals received through the tender have identified more than 4GW of prospective gas-fired generation capacity in Central Queensland alone, more than 10 times the capacity target for the process.

Following evaluation of indicative proposals from a field with proven delivery capability, four proponents have been shortlisted to progress to the next phase of the tender process: AGL, ANZA Power, APA Group and Quinbrook.

The strong response builds on an earlier market sounding process that engaged more than 50 organisations and identified more than 10GW of potential gas-fired generation capacity across the state.

Treasurer and Minister for Energy David Janetzki said the response showed Queensland was open for investment in the energy infrastructure needed to support a growing State.

“The response to the tender has exceeded expectations, with proponents identifying more than 4GW of potential gas-fired generation capacity in Central Queensland,” Treasurer Janetzki said.

“Queensland needs affordable, reliable and sustainable energy, and that means making sure we have the right mix of generation in the system at the right time.

“Competition between multiple credible projects will help ensure Queenslanders receive the best value outcome while strengthening energy security and supporting industrial growth.

“The Crisafulli Government’s Energy Roadmap is focused on improving what we have now and building what is needed for the future, including boosting private investment in new assets.

“This strong market response confirms the private sector is ready to invest in Queensland’s energy future, while respecting taxpayer funds and easing pressure on the balance sheet.”

The next phase of the process will involve further evaluation, due diligence and engagement with the shortlist of proponents.
