Engineering and Technology tops the highly performing subject area
The University of Wollongong (UOW) has performed strongly across the subject areas in the latest 2022 QS World University Rankings by Subject, released today (6th April).
Overall, Engineering and Technology as a broad subject area was ranked 147th globally, a result achieved collectively due to exceptional rankings in Minerals and Mining engineering, ranked 30th globally, and Civil and Structural engineering ranked in top 100 globally and equal 6th in Australia.
Materials Science has performed exceptionally well, achieving 78th rank globally and 5th in Australia. The University’s innovative solutions and research success at its Australian Institute for Innovative Materials and recent breakthroughs in hydrogen technologies have made UOW research a global success.
UOW’s Molecular Horizons is a world-class medical research facility dedicated to solving real-world health problems in our community – from the level of single molecules to the entire body. The Facility also invests in nurturing and training the next generation of researchers through its scholarship programs. These research and investment indicators were reflected in the rankings, with Chemistry ranked 143rd globally and 8th in Australia.
The University’s Nursing program was ranked in the top 100 globally, a major area of focus for UOW to produce world-class healthcare professionals and address future workforce shortages.
The rankings also showed significant strength in Archaeology, Law and Philosophy, all ranked in the top 150 globally; Statistics & Operational Research was also ranked in the top 150 globally and 7th in Australia.
UOW Vice-Chancellor Professor Patricia M. Davidson welcomed the results and said the rankings echo the dedication and hard work of the researchers across the board at the University.
“I’m delighted to see UOW performing strongly across the subject areas,” Professor Davidson said.
“These results indicate our researchers’ outstanding work to solve global issues through education and high-quality research and innovation.
“Looking at our students’ success in their respective fields of study and being recognised as the best graduates by employers is a proud feeling for everyone at the University.”

- Engineering – Electrical and Electronic -Ranked 143 (9th in Aus)
- Engineering – Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing -Ranked 151-200 (=8th in Aus)
- Geography – Ranked 101-150 (=9th in Aus)
- Law – Ranked 101-150 (=8th in Aus)
- Sports-related Subjects – Ranked 51-100
