Stronger protections for long-term caravan park residents now in force

Tasmanian Government

Long-term residents of Tasmania’s caravan and residential parks will benefit from stronger protections and greater certainty, with the Residential Parks Act 2026 now in force.

Minister for Small Business, Trade and Consumer Affairs, Guy Barnett, said these changes would benefit the hundreds of Tasmanians who either live in or operate residential parks.

“We have listened and acted to deliver clear rights and stronger protections for long-term residents, alongside fair and transparent rules for the park operators who provide these sites for residents and visitors alike,” Minister Barnett said.

The legislation establishes clear rights and obligations, fair and transparent agreement termination processes, requirements relating to safety and amenity, and a framework for resolving disputes between residents and operators. It also provides greater certainty for park operators through a modern and dedicated legislative regime.

The legislation includes a limited transitional regulation-making power that may be used to address specific legacy planning or building issues for a period of up to five years.

“These regulations are intended to provide time and flexibility for identified legacy issues to be addressed where necessary,” Minister Barnett said.
