Suburban Rail Loop will be standalone network with new trains

The planned Suburban Rail Loop will have a dedicated fleet of new high-tech trains, four to five carriages long that will help move people faster around Melbourne.

The State Government has also announced that the 90km rail ring will be built as a separate twin-tunnel network, connecting every major rail line from Frankston to the Werribee line. The loop will connect to an airport rail and create three transport super hubs at Clayton, Broadmeadows and Sunshine. There will also be stations located in Glen Waverley and in the Monash University Clayton precinct as part of the landmark project.

Geotechnical pre-construction works are underway in Clayton and have been completed in Glen Waverley. These works will help determine the final alignment and station locations for the project.

More community consultation will commence in 2020 and construction of stage one, including the stations located in Monash, will begin in 2022.
