December marks the start of summer and the start of The Hills Shire Library Service’s Summer Reading Adventure.
The annual program for children aged 5 to 14 years, encourages reading as a lifelong habit and also aims to boost their literacy skills through the books that they read.
“This program will motivate children to continue reading throughout the summer break, which is very important as they move to the next grade at school,” Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Peter Gangemi said.
“Being able to read is extremely important for concentration, memory, vocabulary and self-confidence. It also strengthens their analytical skills and teaches them more about the world around them.
“I encourage all children from The Hills Shire to join the Summer Reading Adventure,” Mayor Gangemi added.
Participants will receive a booklet, filled with fun activities and challenges, which children can complete at their leisure. Once the booklet is complete, participants will receive a special reward and a certificate.
The program is open to all children of all reading abilities, and those who meet the age requirements and are members of the library. To become a member of The Hills Shire Library Service, simply visit your local library branch – Dural, Castle Hill, Baulkham Hills and Vinegar Hill – and signup for FREE.
The Summer Reading Adventure will run until January 31.
