Spectacular Saturday weather promises to provide the perfect backdrop to this year’s Let’s Fish Lake Mac competition, with more than 800 people registered for the two-day event.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said warm, sunny conditions, light winds and clear water would combine to create ideal fishing conditions across the lake and along the coast.
“Fishing is such a popular pastime in Lake Mac, and this is the ideal time of year to get outdoors and enjoy it,” she said.
This year’s contest features more than $32,000 worth of prizes on offer, across junior and open categories.
Entrants can fish for four target species: bream, tailor, flathead and whiting, in tidal waters and on public beaches in the Lake Macquarie LGA.
Prizes will be awarded to participants who catch the largest target species, while others will go to those who catch fish that match a ‘mystery length’,
Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism Jacqui Hemsley said all entrants would also go into the draw for a range of fishing-themed prize packs, including rods, tackle and reels.
“This is a catch-and-release contest, so fish that are caught must still be alive when they’re photographed against our ‘brag mat’ measuring sheets, which are issued to each entrant,” she said.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Saturday’s temperature in Lake Mac is tipped to peak at 27C, with an almost zero chance of rain.
Sunday could reach 29C, with a higher chance of rain in the afternoon and evening.
