Sunday on Shields program to continue

A giant wall for kids and adults to design and colour, after dark entertainment with an arty theme, cooking demonstrations and guiding walking tours focused on food, nature and history, are all proposed for the CBD following the success of the Sunday on Shields program.

The activities are suggested as part of an extension of CBD activations during the first half of 2020 to continue to encourage Cairns residents to visit the city centre and in doing so support local businesses.

The proposed program of events builds on the 11 family themed Sunday on Shields activities, which featured everything from Zumba and circus performances, to Latin dancing and a petting zoo; 4 performances by CQUniversity creative arts students under the banner Art Attack; and live music atop Nemo the Combi.

Around 11,350 people took part in Sunday on Shields and Art Attack activities between March and October, with an overwhelming majority (93%) indicating they enjoyed the weekly offerings.

Council will invest $44,000 in the new program of events, which are expected be held twice a month.
