Sunshine on track to become economic powerhouse of West

Brimbank Mayor Cr Ranka Rasic has welcomed today’s Melbourne Airport Rail announcement, calling the multi-billion dollar project an unprecedented opportunity for lasting and positive change.

“This is much more than a transport project. Through jobs creation and economic growth, we will be on the way to recovery from COVID-19 and on track to see Sunshine become the economic powerhouse of the west.

“A fast and efficient airport rail service stopping at the new Sunshine Super Hub, a station of state-wide significance, will clearly put Sunshine on the map as the gateway to the world and Melbourne’s western CBD.

“We look forward to more detail about how the project will be delivered ensuring the future-proofing of the implementation of the Western Rail Plan and Suburban Rail Loop.

“Critical to the success of the project is a close and effective working relationship with all tiers of government so that the benefits are shared locally and regionally.

“Council has been engaging closely with our community and we have a very clear mandate of what our community’s aspirations and expectations are for how major infrastructure is delivered.

“Our Transforming Brimbank agenda demonstrates that by working together we can deliver infrastructure investment to improve job, education, and health, environment and fairness outcomes for our City and western region.

“We are excited to see this landmark project move ahead. It will reinvent Sunshine and Brimbank as a thriving economic centre — unlocking jobs now and for future generations, and re-establishing our City as an employment epicentre for Melbourne and Victoria’s West.

“Council wants to see the Sunshine Super Hub and Melbourne Airport Rail deliver jobs both during and well beyond construction, and we also seeking education and employment pathways that consider new and emerging professions around the Sunshine Priority Precinct.

“We want to create education and employment pathways that boost the local economy, and we want facilities and services, and a clean and green environment that all help to improve health and wellbeing outcomes for our local community.

This project will help Brimbank thrive by leveraging the creativity and diversity of the west. We can generate new social and economic opportunities and use this as a catalyst for sustainable development where we start to address environmental equity and promote a green recovery as we come out of COVID-19.

Council is ready to partner with State and Federal Government to deliver a project that is responsive to local community needs and delivers benefits to the our City, state and country.

“We look forward to working together on the delivery of this City Shaping project, Mayor Rasic said.
