City of Gold Coast hosted a fundraiser for the start of Movember to raise money for men’s health including mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Mayor Tom Tate said he was proud of the City for again embracing such an important charity that is changing the lives of men around the world.

“Last year, we were the highest fundraising local government in Australia raising over $33,000 – a terrific recognition for our city. Let’s beat that target,” he said.

Globally, testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men. Across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day.

“Men are dying for largely preventable reasons. Now is a timely reminder to check up on your friends and go to that health check-up you’ve been putting off,” he said.

“This is also about having fun and raising awareness. We are dressing up 800 of our City fleet vehicles with the big black moustaches to encourage people to support the Movember cause.”

Council supports several charities and organisations every year through the City-wide Grants Program. The Mayoress Charity Foundation has raised around $2 million since its inception (2012), providing financial support and encouragement to many charities.
