Residents may occasionally notice flying foxes roosting in backyards, parks and other locations where they are not normally seen.
This can occur when food is scarce and flying foxes need to travel further to find flowering and fruiting trees. Instead of returning to established camps, some animals may remain close to available food sources to conserve energy.
Flying foxes play an important role in the environment. As they feed, they pollinate native plants and disperse seeds across large distances, helping to regenerate forests and support biodiversity. Many native species, including koalas, benefit from the healthy ecosystems that flying foxes help sustain.
