Supporting Territory sport through NTIS Officiating Development Program

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture

Six Territory sporting organisations have received grants to help upskill their officiating workforce through the first round of the 2019-20 NT Government’s Northern Territory Institute of Sport’s Officiating Development Program.

The program provides funds for sporting organisations to upskill their coaches/educators of officials, send their officials interstate or to Darwin to gain experience and qualifications, and send Territory educators to remote and regional areas to conduct higher level training and accreditation.

The program is being offered over two rounds in 2019-2020. The successful applicants in Round 1 were AFLNT, NT Rugby Union, BMXNT, NT Softball Association, NT Cricket Association and Yachting NT. Round 2 will open on 28 January 2020 and close on 25 February 2020.

As stated by Dr Ian Ford, Senior Director Sport and Active Recreation:

“The Officiating Development Program will help improve the quality of sports across the Territory by funding training for our officials and official educators.

“Well-trained, accredited local officials are vital for our sports sector. They provide leadership, and guidance for players, and are essential when it comes to holding recognised sporting competitions and championships. As such, officials help provide pathways for Territory athletes to develop and grow.

“Becoming an official also provides another opportunity for Territorians to get involved in a sport they love, and be part of a strong, supportive community.”
