Susan and Gary Rothwell awarded honorary doctorate

Susan and Gary Rothwell have been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Sydney in recognition of their contribution to the architectural landscape of Sydney and Australia and for their exceptional commitment to promoting the academic purposes of the University’s School of Architecture, Design and Planning.

The Rothwells, who are both Sydney architecture alumni have helped shape Sydney – Susan as an architect and Gary Rothwell as an architect-turned-property-developer. The Rothwell’s have generously used their position to influence the University of Sydney community by advancing the disciplines of architecture and urbanism and have supported the broader community through their generosity of time and philanthropy through the Rothwell Family Foundation.

The Rothwells’ commitment to the field of architecture and education continues to have a major impact not only on architecture at the University of Sydney, where they pave the way for meaningful change, but also nationally and internationally.

Susan’s impressive career as a renowned Sydney architect launched in 1972 when she graduated from the University with a Bachelor of Architecture. It was during her time at the University that Susan met fellow student Garry and their personal and professional partnership blossomed. Together they have transformed the architectural landscape of Sydney and Australia.

Susan started her own company in 1974. Her personal approach and design skills soon entrenched Susan Rothwell Architects’ reputation for producing high-quality, iconic designs.

Garry studied for a Bachelor of Architecture and graduated in 1967. After graduating, Garry went on to practice as an architect before founding the Winten Property Group in 1972, where he evolved from architect to property developer. The Winten group is currently being run by Garry and Susan’s three sons David, James and William.

In 2018, the Rothwells made a generous donation to establish ‘the Garry and Susan Rothwell Chair in Architectural Design Leadership.’ The French architecture studio Lacaton & Vassal Architectes are the inaugural appointees of the position, and their program of activities aims to elevate the standard of architectural and urbanism practice.

Both Susan and Gary have dedicated much of their time to support numerous arts and historical foundations and charitable organisations. The Rothwell Family Foundation was established n 2018 to support a wide variety of areas including culture and the arts, health, environmental and animal protection causes.

Honorary degrees are awarded to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the wider community or who have achieved exceptional academic or creative excellence. Susan and Gary Rothwell been admitted to the degree of Doctor of Architecture (honoris causa).
