A suspended learner-driver detected travelling 130km/h above the limit yesterday, was one of a number of drivers detected travelling at high speed across the state at the weekend.
Just after 12.30pm (Sunday 10 May 2020), a blue Ford sedan was involved in a pursuit after allegedly failing to stop on the Kamilaroi Highway in Breeza, near Walgett in the state’s far north-west.
The Ford allegedly reached a speed of 240km/h in a 110km/h zone before the driver, a 20-year-old woman, stop and was arrested by police. Checks revealed the woman is the holder of a learner’s licence that is currently suspended.
The woman was taken to Gunnedah Police Station and charged with drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, drive motor vehicle while licence suspended, Class A motor vehicle exceed speed (over 45 km/h) and police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously.
She was granted conditional bail to appear at Gunnedah Local Court on Tuesday 7 July 2020.
Two male occupants were also spoken to by police and the vehicle was searched, with police locating methylamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Inquiries continue.
In an unrelated incident, a man was detected driving 110km/h above the speed limit in Sydney’s west just after 1.30am yesterday (Sunday 10 May 2020).
A silver Audi RS3 sedan was observed travelling at speed on King Georges Road, Roselands, before turning onto Moorefields Road, where police initiated a pursuit and the car reached an estimated speed of 160km/h in a 50km/h zone.
The vehicle slowed at the intersection of Chapel Road and the 18-year-old driver was arrested and taken to Campsie Police Station.
He was charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, Class A motor vehicle exceed speed (more than 45 km/h), not comply P1/P2 high-performance vehicle restriction, not comply P2 licence condition not display P plates, and drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous.
He was granted conditional bail to appear at Burwood Local Court on Tuesday 28 July 2020.
Other notable incidents at the weekend include (Friday 8 May – Sunday 10 May 2020);
- About 8.40pm on Friday (8 May 2020), police saw a white Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI and white Volkswagen Golf travelling side by side, allegedly reaching speeds between 160km/h–180km/h in a 110km/h zone of the Hume Motorway, Ingleburn. Both vehicles were stopped shortly after by police. The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 33-year-old man from Regents Park, was issued a Field Court Attendance Notice for Class A motor vehicle exceed speed limit (over 45km/h), drive at manner/speed dangerous, street race – take part, and issued and had their licences. The 19-year-old driver of the Volkswagen, a man from St Andrews, was also issued a Field Court Attendance Notice for organise, promote etc race between vehicles and P2 driver exceed speed (over 45 km/h). Both men had their licences suspended and will appear in Campbelltown Local Court on Wednesday 15 July 2020.
- At 11.10pm on Saturday, a Kawasaki Ninja 250 motorcycle was checked travelling at a speed of 142km/h in an 80km/h zone on Elizabeth Drive, Cecil Park. The rider, a 19-year-old man from West Gosford, was pulled over by police and issued a Field Court Attendance Notice for exceed speed (over 45 km/h) and drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous. He is due to appear in Liverpool Local Court on Monday 29 June 2020.
- About 7.40pm on Saturday, police detected a motorcycle allegedly travelling at a speed of 134km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Western Distributor at Pyrmont. The 23-year-old rider was stopped and issued an infringement notice for exceed speed (over 45km/h). The man, from Bondi, also had his licence suspended for six months.
- At 1pm on Saturday, a black Audi A5 sedan was checked travelling at 116km/h in a 60km/h zone on Henderson Road at Ingleburn. Police stopped the vehicle and spoke with the 20-year-old P-plate driver. Further inquiries revealed the man had been issued a penalty notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 20km/h in August 2019. The man was issued an infringement notice for exceed speed (over 45km/h) and had his licence suspended for six months.
- About 5.45pm on Saturday, officers from Kuring Gai Highway Patrol were conducting speed enforcement on the Pacific Highway, Cowan, when a blue BMW sports wagon was allegedly detected travelling 140km/h in an 80km/h zone. Police stopped the vehicle and spoke with the 24-year-old male driver from Warrawee, who was subsequently issued an infringement notice for exceed speed (over 45km/h) and his licence was suspended for six months.
- Just before 11pm on Saturday, police conducting patrols of Burns Road, Turramurra, detected a blue Nissan Skyline travelling at 122km/h in a sign posted 50km/h area. The driver, a 24-year-old man from Ashfield, was issued an infringement notice for exceed speed (over 45km/h) and driver use mobile phone when not permitted. His licence was suspended for six months.
- Just after 4.30pm yesterday (Sunday 10 May 2020), a VW Golf R and Harley Davidson that were following each other were allegedly detected travelling at 140km/h in a sign posted 80km/h area, travelling south on the Pacific Highway at Mt Kuring Gai. Both male drivers were issued infringement notices for exceed speed (over 45km/h) and had their licenses suspended for six months. As the rider was the owner of the motorcycle, his registration plates were also confiscated for three months.
- Just after midnight yesterday, a silver Mazda sedan was stopped by police after it was detected travelling at 108km/h in a 60km/h zone on Victoria Road, Rozelle, before the Anzac Bridge. The driver was arrested after a roadside drug test returned a positive result. The man, aged 38 from Croydon, was arrested and taken to Newtown Police Station where a secondary oral fluid test allegedly returned a positive result for methylamphetamine. He was issued an infringement notice for exceed speed over 45km/h and his licence was suspended for six months.
- Around 8.35pm yesterday, a black Honda Integra Coupe and a blue Ford Falcon XR6T sedan were observed accelerating on the Hume Highway towards Carramar. The speed limit was 40km/h, with police checking the vehicles travelling at 145km/h. Shortly after at the intersection of the Hume Highway and Chadderton Street, Lansvale, both drivers were spoken to by police. The Ford driver, a 28-year-old Liverpool man and the Honda driver, a 21-year-old Villawood man, were issued Court Attendance Notices for take part in race between motor vehicles. They were also issued infringements for exceed speed (more than 45 km/h).
