Swan Hill and Robinvale Landfill free green waste weekend

Swan Hill Rural City Council is once again offering to its residents, free green waste disposal at both the Swan Hill and Robinvale Landfills on the weekend of Saturday, 23 and Sunday, 24 October.

Council’s Director Infrastructure Svetla Petkova is encouraging residents to take advantage of this opportunity, by way of getting out in the garden and having a good tidy up before the hotter summertime weather arrives.

“The free weekend is a great way of reducing our environmental impact by keeping recyclable green waste out of landfill and instead creating a reusable resource to the benefit of our community.

“Residents are able to place lawn clippings and small tree pruning’s in their normal kerbside general waste bins, but this material ends up being disposed of into landfill.

“Some people want a more environmentally friendly way to get rid of their green waste,” Ms Petkova said.

Ms Petkova said dedicated loads of green waste taken to the landfill are mulched and turned into a valuable resource which can then be used as garden cover around the municipality and also made available to residents to self-load for free.

“Mulching is very beneficial to plants and it helps to reduce water use as well.

“Materials that will be accepted over the free green waste weekend include small tree prunings, garden clippings, grass and leaf litter,” she said.

To take advantage of this event residents need only load their boot, ute or trailer with greenwaste which is clean and free of any contamination or rubbish, take along either a copy of their property rate notice or rental agreement and personal identification and turn up during the advertised opening hours.

Please note that commercial loads of green waste will not be accepted for free.

The Swan Hill Landfill will be open 9am-2pm on the Saturday and 9am-4pm on the Sunday. Robinvale Landfill will be open 9am-3pm on the Sunday.

What are some other ways to dispose of your green waste?

Disposal at the landfills all other times of the year

Residential loads of clean lawn clippings are accepted free anytime of the year.

Clean Residential green waste loads accepted at the landfills, including tree prunings, garden clippings, leaf litter and weeds are charged at half the cost of a normal load of waste.

Other charges apply for Commercial volumes.

Kerbside collection

Residents of the Swan Hill Township also have the opportunity to utilise Councils opt in kerbside green waste collection service.

For as little as $95 a year, you can put all of your lawn clippings, small branches, garden and tree prunings and weeds into a 240 litre wheelie bin supplied by Council and have it collected right from your kerb every fortnight. This material will then be diverted from landfill and processed for reuse achieving a much better environmental outcome.

This service is charged via Councils rate notice and the request must be approved by the landowner. If you are renting, you can attach a permission form from your landlord to your application.

Council will also consider applications from Commercial property owners for a kerbside greenwaste service.
