Sydney continues its rise in global rankings

The University of Sydney has moved up nine places in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2021. This jump in rankings is underpinned by our excellence in research, our teaching reputation and an increase in academic citations.

Now in its 17th year, the THE World University Rankings ranked 1,527 institutions from 93 countries, drew on data points on almost 2,000 of the world’s leading research universities and more than 22,000 academic reputation survey responses.

The University improved across ranks in research, citation impact and teaching reputation.

This outstanding result further cements our reputation as one of the world’s leading universities.

Dr Michael Spence, University of Sydney Vice- Chancellor and Principal

“We continue to perform strongly and deliver leading research that is recognised globally. This affords our staff and students the opportunity to make a real difference and contribution to society; collaborating with partners to address the most challenging topics of our time – be it a global pandemic, climate change, racism or sustainability,” Dr Spence said.

The THE World University Rankings are the only global university performance tables to judge universities across all of their core missions, including citations, research, teaching, international outlook and industry income. The annual rankings measure factors such as academic reputation, core areas of teaching, citation statistics, international outlook, and research income and degrees awarded.

The University has done well in all major rankings this year – THE Impact Rankings in April (up 23 places to second in the world), QS World University Rankings in June (up two places to 40th in the world) and ARWU Rankings in August (up six places to 74th in the world).

The University is consistently at the forefront of pioneering research and is recognised for its support of early career researchers and student entrepreneurs in taking their big ideas to the next level.

This continued excellence in research and teaching makes the University of Sydney one of the top universities in Australia and highly ranked among universities globally.
