Talking about sustainability

Kempsey Shire Council

Whether you are worried about how to deal with a changing climate, your energy bill, limiting water use or the rising costs of waste, it all comes down to sustainability. How do we live a more sustainable life in the Macleay Valley?

Kempsey Shire Council is currently seeking the community’s thoughts and ideas on how to improve sustainability in our region. This is a chance to have a say on ideas ranging from renewable energy sources and community resilience infrastructure to public transport and eco-friendly tourism.

Council wants to hear from the community about their concerns, their fears and their ideas on how we can all make the Kempsey Shire a more sustainable and resilient community. Head to ksc,pub/sustainability or pick up a Sustainability and Resilience Discussion Guide at Customer Service or the Library.

It’s Biodiversity Month

September is National Biodiversity Month which focuses on protecting, conserving and improving biodiversity within Australia and across the world. Did you know 238 animal and plant species in the Macleay are threatened with extinction?

Here’s some simple things you can do:

  • Create a natural habitat in your backyard. Plant species that are native to our area to provide homes and food for local birds and wildlife.
  • Be a responsible pet owner. Make sure your cat is de-sexed and kept indoors when possible.
  • Search for species in your local area. There are some great apps to help like the iNaturalist Australia app, the I Spy Koala app and the FrogID app.
  • Join and volunteer with Macleay Landcare Network

Do you have video of the Black Summer bushfires?

The Black Summer bushfires were a time of great tragedy and heroism in our shire. Council is supporting the creation of a video documentary about the Macleay Valley bushfire experience. Did you capture any video during or in the aftermath of the 2019 fires that you would be willing to share?
