Tamworth Regional Heritage Awards go online

Though social distancing restrictions continue to put a hold on events across the country, it won’t stop Tamworth Regional Council from recognising those who have worked to preserve the Tamworth region’s built, social and cultural heritage at the 2020 Tamworth Regional Biennial Heritage Awards.

To ensure that award winners receive the recognition they deserve, the awards ceremony has been moved to an online format for the first time, and will be broadcast live on Tamworth Regional Council’s Facebook page at 10am on Friday 15 May.

“COVID-19 is posing a great number of challenges to our community, but the silver lining of this situation is that innovation is shining through,” said Tamworth Regional Council’s Cr Juanita Wilson, chairperson of the Tamworth Regional Heritage Working Group.

“We’ve had nominations come through from every corner of the Tamworth region, and though we can’t celebrate these people and projects in person right now, their contribution to heritage in the Tamworth region is no less significant. We are pleased that technology can assist Council to still acknowledge the thoughtful and time consuming effort behind each nomination.”

Originally scheduled as part of the annual Tamworth Regional Heritage Festival, it was decided that the Tamworth Regional Heritage Awards would go ahead despite the festival’s cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Awards will be broadcast live from Tamworth Regional Gallery, and will include the announcement of winners and other finalists across six project categories and one individual category.

“Nominations for the 2020 awards represent both high profile projects and those that are less so, but equally as important,” said Cr Wilson.

“We sincerely thank everyone who took the time to submit a nomination, and invite the community to join us in congratulating the winners this Friday.”

The community can view and interact live with the announcement by visiting Council’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com.au/tamworthregionalcouncil at 10am on Friday, 15 May. The results will also be shared with media, published on Council’s website and made viewable to watch back on Youtube from Friday afternoon. Trophies, certificates and a letter from the Mayor, Cr Col Murray will be posted to recipients after the announcement.
