Targeted approach for this year’s Clean-up Australia Day

Bega Valley Shire Council is calling on the community to help keep the area spick-and-span with a targeted approach to cleaning up areas impacted by littering.

With this year’s Clean-up Australia Day coming up on Sunday 5 March, Council’s Waste Services team is asking for all eyes on the places that need the most attention.

Council’s Waste Education Officer, Rebecca Bruce said the slightly different approach will see more bags filled and a cleaner Bega Valley for everyone to enjoy.

“In past years we’ve encouraged people to look after their own patch,” Ms Bruce said.

“While taking pride in places close to home is a great thing, it sometimes misses areas that may need more attention.

“So this year we’re asking people to target an area they love to use and enjoy on a regular basis. This may be a park or a foreshore area for example.

“One of the reasons for this approach is to inspire others to get involved in the annual clean-up event.

“If a noticeable improvement is seen in public spaces, it’s likely that people will make that extra effort to keep them clean and to volunteer their efforts the following year.”

Ms Bruce said that people only need to give a two-hour commitment on Sunday 5 March to help.

“There are already public clean-up events registered at Tura Beach, Wonboyn, Bega Bermagui and local schools that anyone can join. Or if there if somewhere else you want to target, it’s easy to hop on the Clean-up Australia Day website to register a new site,” Ms Bruce said.

“Participate as a group or individual and make it a challenge and a fun event. The first person to fill their bag wins—that kind of thing.

“Once your bag is full all you need to do is place it in your bin if there’s space or drop it off for free at your nearest waste transfer station.”
