Task Force Southern investigates suspected murders

SAPOL Major Crime Investigation Branch investigators have initiated the formation of Task Force Southern to investigate a number of unsolved murders in the southern area of Adelaide.

The Task Force is made up of 42 personnel including investigators and intelligence officers led by Detective Superintendent Des Bray who stated, ‘Task Force Southern is one of the largest task forces of its type assembled by SAPOL using a handpicked team of experienced detectives, intelligence officers and forensic scientists.’

There are three murders in particular where the victims and the alleged suspects, are all believed to have been associated with the local methamphetamine and criminal scene across the southern suburbs of Adelaide.

Those alleged to have been murdered are Robert Atkins, Trevor King and Jeff Mundy.

In 2020, Robert Atkins, then a 31 year old man from the southern suburbs of Adelaide, is alleged to have been held captive for about a week before being forced to commit crimes for his captors.

It will be further alleged that Robert believed if he obeyed the direction of his captors he would be let go. The last known sighting of Robert was captured on CCTV, where he is seen to be in the presence of another man and purchases items from a store. Both are seen leaving the store together.

Robert is believed to have been murdered within the area of Port Pirie and Booborowie and his body left near Orroroo. The vehicle believed used by the suspect was captured by a safety camera on its way back to Adelaide near Willaston.

That car was a 2010 black Jeep Cherokee registered number S556AJE.

In February 2019, it is alleged that Trevor King, then a 41 year old man from the southern suburbs was the victim of unlawful detention and serious assaults, resulting from a drug debt. The drug debt was initially $1000. However, this was increased to $10,000; and then $50,000, due to the lack of a timely payment to the people he owed the money.

In late January 2020, Trevor’s body was located in West Lakes and was initially treated as a suicide. Further investigations have now resulted in Trevor’s death being declared a major crime and he is suspected of having been murdered.

Jeff Mundy, then a 36 year old man from the southern suburbs was reported missing on 23 December 2020. His last known sighting was on 19 December 2020, where he was captured on CCTV filling a script at a chemist in the Colonnades Shopping Centre at Noarlunga. After an extensive investigation, there is no evidence consistent with him being still alive.

Jeff Mundy’s death has now been declared a major crime and it is feared he has been also murdered.

‘It is alleged the men have all been murdered by low level drug dealers and petty criminals, who get together with others to bully, threaten and stand over others’, Detective Superintendent Des Bray said.
