Tasmania’s visitor economy continues to go from strength to strength, with new data showing a record 1.4 million visitors travelled to the State in the year to March 2026, up 4.8 per cent on the previous year.
The result was driven by record interstate visitation, with 1.2 million visitors travelling domestically and a 10.1 per cent increase in international visitors.
Minister for Tourism, Hospitality and Events, Roger Jaensch, said the results reflected the strength of Tasmania’s visitor economy and the hard work of our tourism industry.
“Tasmania continues to prove it is one of the world’s must-visit destinations, thanks to the hard work of our tourism, hospitality and events operators, their dedicated staff and welcoming communities right across the State,” Minister Jaensch said.
“These results are a positive sign of the strength of Tasmania’s visitor economy and, while we know there is more work ahead, they put us in a strong position as we continue to support operators and drive visitation year-round.”
The latest Tasmanian Visitor Survey also showed visitor spending reached almost $3.8 billion, up 7.8 per cent, making it the second strongest result for any year ending in March.
“It is fantastic to see international visitors making an increasingly significant contribution to Tasmania’s visitor economy, with spending growing by 36.2 per cent to a record $758.6 million, alongside the continued strong contribution from interstate visitors,” Minister Jaensch said.
“The March quarter alone saw records in both visitation and spend with 494,300 visitors spending a $1.53 billion, as strong result leading into the shoulder and winter period.
“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future we’re continuing to build on Tasmania’s reputation as a world-leading tourism destination by investing in the next generation of workers, growing our brand and support regional dispersal.”
