Tasmania records fastest rate of retail trade growth

Peter Gutwein,Treasurer

Tasmania’s record-breaking run of retail growth continues, with January 2019 marking the 51st consecutive month of growth.

The ABS confirmed Tasmania recorded the equal fastest rate of retail trade growth in Australia, with annual growth of 4.5 per cent over the year to January 2019, in trend terms. This was almost double the national average growth rate and in January 2019, retail trade hit $548 million.

The strong growth in retail trade contributed to the strong economic growth figures reported earlier this week, which showed Tasmania’s State Final Demand grew nearly twice the national average.

These great results don’t happen by accident, they are the result of the Hodgman Liberal Government’s strong economic management, which is leading to high business confidence, investment and more jobs for Tasmanians.

Tasmania is now a better place to live, work and invest than ever before, and these figures are more confirmation that our long term plan is improving the lives of every Tasmanian.
