The Tasmanian building and construction industry continues to experience high levels of activity, even in the face of the economic and social impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
ABS data released today shows that in July 2022 there were 269 dwelling approvals in Tasmania, which is a 3.1 per cent increase compared to the previous month, and 4.3 per cent higher than July last year.
This pleasing result is the strongest growth rate of all states on both a monthly and annual basis, showing that Tasmanians continue to have the confidence to commit to building a home and increasing the supply of housing.
Whilst the construction market has normalised after the success of the Australian and Tasmanian Government Homebuilder programs, which provided crucial support to the industry through the pandemic, approvals over the last 12 months remain at very high levels historically, with 3,193 approvals in the year to July.
Today’s data shows that there continues to be a significant pipeline of work in Tasmania’s housing construction sector, and that means ongoing jobs and growth in our economy.
It has been projected by industry that over the next decade, the building and construction sector in Tasmania will build $16 billion worth of public and private projects, and construct 30,000 homes.
We are working to support the industry to deliver this massive level of investment through our High Vis Army program aims to build capacity for the sector by working with the industry to attract, train, and retain employees.
