Tasmanian Housing Strategy charts 20-year vision

Nic Street, Minister for Housing and Construction

The Rockliff Liberal Government has today launched the Tasmanian Housing Strategy, a first in the State’s history, with the goal of delivering more homes and ending homelessness in Tasmania by 2043.

Nothing is more important than ensuring all Tasmanians can find a place to call home and allowing our children to have the same opportunities for home ownership as previous generations.

Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street, said that the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s long-term plan will deliver a well-functioning housing system that provides safe, appropriate and affordable housing for all Tasmanians.

“We know that Tasmania is changing – we have seen our population increase, changes in the way we work and live, and rising cost of living pressures which have necessitated long-term thinking to ensure our State is the best place to live in Australia,” Minister Street said.

“At its core the Strategy’s mission is to give every Tasmanian the opportunity to live their life to the fullest by allowing them to live how they want, where they want.

“This Strategy is the first of its kind in Australia and uniquely Tasmanian, taking a whole-of-system approach.

“It will allow us to deliver more quality homes faster, prioritising medium-density accommodation and infill development to make the most of our existing infrastructure and services.

“It identifies how we can better support those in need, making it easier for them to access and maintain stable, secure accommodation when they need it most.

“It champions greater affordability and stability in the private market from our regions to our city centres, enabling local prosperity and continued economic growth that will benefit the entire State.

“I want to thank everyone who worked over the past two years to inform this landmark Strategy.

“We have heard, and we have listened, and now we will continue working together to ensure its successful delivery for the benefit of all Tasmanians.

“The Strategy will continue to support the fantastic work Homes Tasmania and its community partners are delivering, including innovative schemes like the MyHome Shared Equity Program.

“I am proud to be unveiling our State’s first housing strategy and I am confident that it will improve the housing system and meet the needs of Tasmanians.”
