Tasmanians overwhelming support for our tourism industry

Peter Gutwein,Premier & Minister for Tourism

We know our tourism and hospitality industry has been one of the hardest hit through the COVID-19 pandemic, and I’m so pleased with today’s response to our travel voucher initiative.

We introduced this scheme to drive intrastate visitation while our interstate market is not available to us and to support and encourage Tasmanians to get out and experience their home State.

Given the number of registrations we received this morning, it’s clear that Tasmanians are keen to take up the chance to take a break, explore our State and in doing so support our industry at the same time.

Over 21,500 vouchers were allocated and with the scheme running through school holidays, demand for family packages has been high, with around 8000 family vouchers claimed.

We estimate the vouchers issued equate to around 40,000 bed nights and at least 40,000 experiences with around 55,000 Tasmanians to benefit.

We launched this program as a $7.5 million initiative, however, due to the extraordinary take-up and demand for vouchers we will monitor the use and redemption of vouchers in coming weeks and are already considering the details of a second tranche.

We all know Tassie is one of the best places in the world and today’s interest shows that we’re keen to explore more of our beautiful State. I’m looking forward to seeing Tasmanians Make Themselves at Home over the next few months.
