Burnie Police are asking residents to make sure their cars and houses are locked up during the Christmas period, to prevent opportunistic theft.
There has been a recent increase in burglaries in Tasmania’s north-west, particularly in the Wynyard area. About two thirds of the vehicles targeted have been left unlocked.
“Police would like to reassure members of the community that thefts of this nature are largely opportunistic, which is why people are asked to take the time to ensure houses and vehicles are locked when unattended,” said Senior Sergeant Tony Stewart.
“Owners are also asked to make sure valuable items are not in plain sight at shacks, caravans and campsites, as these are soft targets for criminals who may actively target tourist areas.”
There are a number of steps that can be taken to reduce the likelihood of you becoming a victim of crime:
- Ensure your house or car is securely locked when unattended, including windows.
- Cancel any deliveries, including newspapers, and have your mail redirected or collected by a friend or neighbour.
- Secure your garage and move items such as bikes inside.
- Do not leave large amounts of cash in the house and keep valuables in a safe place.
- Do not leave property in your car.
