Tasmanians urged to prepare for serious weather and flooding

Michael Ferguson,

Tasmanians are urged to prepare for intense widespread rainfall and flooding, forecast from this evening until Friday morning.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts that heavy and consistent rain is likely from this evening, throughout Thursday and into Friday morning.

The forecast is for steady and significant rain State-wide, and specifically intense rainfall in the North and North-West.

Tasmanians are strongly encouraged to be aware of the forecast and prepare their property before the rain arrives – this means knowing your flood risk and understanding whether your property is prone to flooding.

People in some areas of North and North-West Tasmania may become isolated during this ongoing weather event.

People should review their household emergency kit and flood emergency plan, including evacuation triggers now. Livestock and animals should be moved to higher ground, out of flood prone areas.

With the ground being saturated in many areas of Tasmania, rivers will rise quickly over coming days.

The SES advises people to do the following:

* Check TasALERT.com for current SES flood warnings;

* Check bom.gov.au for the latest weather forecast and warnings;

* Be prepared for flash-flooding;

* Be prepared for power outages;

* Minimise unnecessary travel.
