A multi-agency response has resulted in the successful rescue of two teenagers on Sydney’s eastern beaches.
About 2.10pm today (Friday 7 April 2023), emergency services responded to reports that two teenage boys – aged 16 and 17 – had become stranded at the cliff bases of Mistral Point, Maroubra, after jumping into the surf from the top of the cliffs.
The teenagers were washed against the rocks and were able to take refuge in a cave, as friends contacted emergency services.
Officers from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command, the Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit and Marine Area Command attended, along with Surf Life Saving NSW, Randwick Council Lifeguards and NSW Ambulance paramedics.
Due to the inaccessibility of the location, officers attached to the Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit abseiled down to the teenager’s location and winched them up the cliff face.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the boys for minor cuts and abrasions. They were taken to Prince of Wales Hospital as a precaution.
Eastern Beaches Police Area Command Duty Officer, Chief Inspector Tracy Ford, said the rescue was a great outcome as a result of the efforts of all agencies involved.
“Whilst the area does attract adventure seekers, it must not be forgotten that the area is still extremely dangerous,” Chief Inspector Ford said.
“Thankfully the Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit are trained for such retrievals – and thanks to the quick response of all first responders – we were able to avoid a tragic outcome this long weekend.”
