Tender released for new Visitor Gateway designer for Freycinet Peninsula

Nick Duigan, Minister for Parks

The Rockliff Liberal Government is building the tourism infrastructure we need to grow the economy and we are pleased to release a tender to engage a lead design consultant for a new Visitor Gateway for the Freycinet Peninsula.

Minister for Parks, Nick Duigan, said Freycinet National Park is one of Tasmania’s most iconic natural locations enjoyed by both locals and visitors alike and importantly the Visitor Gateway is proposed to be outside the National Park.

“Freycinet is also a place of cultural significance to the Tasmanian Aboriginal People in addition to being one of Tasmania’s premier tourism hotspots, attracting thousands of visitors each year,” Minister Duigan said.

“This is an exciting milestone to help futureproof the site and enhance the visitor experience and is part of the Tasmanian Government’s $40.2 million Parks Powering Regional Economies Plan.

“The design of the new Visitor Gateway will be important in making the Park easier to enjoy while protecting its natural and cultural values. It will connect the peninsula arrival corridor, Coles Bay and the Freycinet National Park as a key part of the Freycinet Peninsula Master Plan.

“The development will deliver a carpark with electric vehicle charging facilities, visitor interface space, amenities and bus shelter with construction expected to start in 2025.”

“The design will focus on delivering a low impact and sustainable building which streamlines visitor access. It will also incorporate Aboriginal interpretations and information on the Park, Freycinet Peninsula experiences and services provided by local businesses.

“Once complete, the Visitor Gateway will promote sustainable access by reducing vehicle movement and congestion as well as provide additional visitor information within Coles Bay and Freycinet National Park.

Minister Duigan said the Project is supported through a $14 million commitment by the Rockliff Liberal Government and a commitment of $5.7 million from the Federal Government.

The tender will be released on 18 November 2023 and will close on 22 December 2023, it will be open to suitably qualified consultants. Further information, including on qualification requirements and how to tender, will be available through the Department of Treasury and Finance tender’s website: www.tenders.tas.gov.au
