TEQSA Commissioner’s Appointment Welcomed By Independent Sector

The appointment of Emeritus Professor Peter Coaldrake AO as a Commissione r of the Tertiary Ed ucat ion
Qua lity and Standards Agency (TEQSA) has bee n welcomed by the Independent Tertiary Educa tion
Counc il Australia (ITECA), the peak body representing independent pro viders in the higher education.

“Professor Coaldr ak e’s broad understanding of the issues before Australia ‘s higher education sector will
serve both TEQSA and independent higher education providers well, ” said Troy Williams, ITECA Chief
Executiv e.

In October 2018, Professor Coaldrake was appointed by the Education Minister, the Hon. Dan Tehan MP.

to conduct a review into the Higher Education Provider Category Standards.

“This r eview was particularly important for independent higher educatio n provider s, and ITECA was
involved in the consultation process. I t’s pleasing that Professor Coaldr ak e’s experience in this area of
TEQSA ‘s work will be available to guide the regulator ‘s strategic decision -making,” Mr Williams said.

The Minister for Education has appointed P rofessor Coaldrake for five years. Professor Coaldrake will
join existing TEQSA Commissioners Professor Nick Saunders AO, Emeritus Professor Joan Cooper, and
Emeritus Professor Cliff Walsh.

Around 10% of the 1.5 million students in higher education are with independent providers.
